We Are Financial Allies For Women
Today, women in the United States control $11 trillion in assets. Shifts in demographics over the next decade predict that women’s wealth will nearly triple to $30 trillion. Wealth is increasingly moving into women’s hands, and they are becoming more involved with how their money gets managed and what their investments mean for the future of our world.
As highlighted in a 2021 Fidelity Women & Investing survey, more women than ever are taking a seat at the investing table, with 50% of women saying they are more interested in investing since the start of the pandemic and have more to invest. While this is encouraging, still only one-third of women see themselves as investors. Women feel confident being the CFO of the household, managing day-to-day finances, but are less confident when it comes to long-term planning and investing.
Research shows that compared with five years ago, 30% more married women are making financial and investing decisions. And it’s not just married women. There is a growing demographic of single women that are building their own wealth and looking for a financial ally to help them manange it. Women often experience greater financial impacts from divorce or separation than men and are twice as likely as men to cite divorce as the reason for opening a new investment account.
At Artemis, we are financial advocates for all women and are passionate about helping women build and leverage their wealth. We invite you to chat with us using the Schedule Call button at the bottom of the page to learn more about our Women and Wealth practice.
Six Financial Decisions for Women
Should I Hire A Financial Advisor?
Many women will admit to not being comfortable making financial or investment decisions. Others claim they are simply not that interested in the topic. But what they are interested in is being smart and sensible stewards of their wealth, which for many means looking for some outside counsel.
The harder decision is what type of advisor to hire. Over the years, we have heard from many of our prospective clients how challenged they were by this decision. As a result, we wrote a piece on what factors to consider when selecting a financial advisor. You can read it here.
How Much Investment Risk Is Enough?
Survey results tend to indicate that women are less risk tolerant than men. There are good reasons for this – they typically have fewer financial resources, live longer and have more responsibility for caring for aging family members. In short, their money must go further for longer.
At Artemis, we don’t believe that there is one right answer for all and that’s why we advocate having a plan that shows you how much risk you might need to take to reach your financial goals, but one that also shows you other available strategies should too much market volatility keep you up at night.
How Much Money Can I Spend in Retirement?
No one wants to run out of money before they die and women tend to worry more than men do about becoming a financial burden to their family. But women also want to have a comfortable retirement, maintaining their lifestyle while also being able to accommodate any unexpected family situation.
Our financial projections are highly customized and detailed and are updated regularly to ensure that spending is aligned with our client’s wealth and projected longevity.
How Can I Leverage My Wealth To Drive Social Change?
We find that women increasingly want to harness their growing wealth and influence to support issues and causes that are important to them. But how much can they give away, without jeopardizing their own financial independence and future, is a question we often get.
We spend time listening and learning about what matters to you, analyzing your financial wherewithal and working with you and your other advisors to help make your philanthropic vision a reality.
Is Sustainable Investing Right for Me?
Surveys tell us that women especially are interested in expressing their values though their investment decisions. The good news is that newer research demonstrates that firms that perform well on environmental, social and governance (ESG) factors often outperform from a financial perspective..
As a result of this research and the availability of low-cost ESG investing vehicles, we are pleased to offer sustainable investing as an option to all of our clients and now even own some ESG funds in most all client portfolios. For larger clients, we are even able to provide more customized support.
Should I Purchase a Long-term Care Policy?
Artemis had not been in business for a month when a female prospect came in wanting to learn more about long-term care insurance, worried that she might otherwise become a burden to her children. Her question prompted us to do a bunch of research on this important topic and adopt a framework for helping clients make this decision.
Today, we still use this framework and it has served us well. You can read more about it here.
